LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - A major sausage recall is impacting three southern states, and it looks like Louisiana is impacted.

D.J.’s Boudain, which is based in Texas, is recalling over 17,000 pounds of one of its products, a popular style of sausage that Louisiana is well known for - boudin (or "boudain").

What Is "Boudain"?

In Louisiana, we know it as "boudin" - a style of Cajun French sausage that mixes pork, liver, rice, and spices can be stuffed into a casing, rolled into a ball and fried, or used as a filling in various other dishes.

Both "boudin" and "boudain" are the correct spelling of the word, but "boudain" is more common in Texas. D.J.'s Boudain, for example, is based in Texas. Still, the product they make is virtually the same as the product made in Louisiana (although Louisiana pride dictates that we cannot admit it tastes as good).

The Recall - What States Are Impacted?

According to the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), D.J.'s issued a recall of 17,720 pounds of boudain sausage link products that "may be contaminated with foreign materials."

According to the recall alert, a consumer reported an issue when they discovered a part of a pen in their sausage.

"There has been one reported oral injury associated with consumption of this product," the agency reported. "FSIS has received no additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury should contact a healthcare provider."

The concern is that contaminated products may still be circulating.

"FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’, retailers’, and restaurants’ refrigerators or freezers," the recall alert states. "Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."

The product was distributed to vendors, restaurants, and retail locations in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

If you do have it, do not eat it, the company and FSIS say.
