WATCH: Ascension Episcopal QB Jake Vascocu On 2016 Season

In today's football culture, it's hard to win without a leader at the quarterback position. Ascension Episcopal thinks they found their next gunslinger.

Jake Arceneaux put on a show leading the Blue Gator offense last season, and his senior season earned him a chance to play for the Ragin' Cajuns. One of his favorite targets was Jake Vascocu, a shifty athlete who also played on defense. Vascocu won't be running routes this year. He'll be the one pulling the trigger now.

Head Coach Matt Desormeaux feels safe putting the ball in Vascocu's hands, and his junior QB is working on adjusting to his new position.

He might have to tweak his technique as a QB, but he won't have to change his mindset.

“I like the feeling of responsibility for my team, I’ve had it for a couple years now," Vascocu said with quiet confidence. "I think I bring more of a quickness mentality, and I’m working on my pocket passing game, and I think I’ll be able to help the team with that this year."

The Blue Gator offense can really carve up a defense, with the right point man calling the shots. Vascocu will have targets like Ronald LeBlanc, a 6'5" monster at wideout, and Zach Ronquillo, who can move all over the field, on top of a developing read option game. If he has success reading defenses, Ascension Episcopal could go deep in the playoffs again.

Vascocu said the team goals remain the same heading into the 2016 season: win District 7-1A and go to state. Easier said than done, but he's willing to put the work in.
