When a team goes down 41-7 in the 1st half, it’s easy for that team to pack it in, to give up. But not the Lafayette High Mighty Lions, who ended up making it a two-score game in the 4th Quarter, with enough time left to complete a comeback.

But it wasn’t to be for LHS, who eventually fell to Woodlawn-Baton Rouge 47-34.

In a game full of big plays, the Panthers simply made more of them, especially when it counted the most, as they were building their insurmountable lead.

It started when Darian Johnson scored the first of his two touchdowns, putting the Panthers on the board first with a 6-yard rushing touchdown to give Woodlawn a 7-0 lead with 5:19 left in the 1st Quarter.

But the Lions answered on the ensuing kickoff as Troy Williams went 84 yards for the score to tie the game at 7.

But then the Panthers went on a blitz, scoring five straight touchdowns. Four of those touchdowns came on the arm of QB Jamari Nelson to three different receivers - Michael Falodun, Quincy Vessell and Tahj Sullivan, who’s two touchdowns sandwiched Falodun and Vessell’s. Javin Myers, whose head coach Luquette Daniel says is receiving offers from Tulane, capped on the scoring spree with a sensational 54-yard touchdown run.

LHS would get on the scoreboard right before the 1st half ended as QB Dwight Youngblood threw a 55-yard TD pass to Archie Ducote to cut the lead to 41-14 at the half.

The 3rd Quarter was controlled by the Lions as they scored on a short Trey Davis TD run and the defense shut down the Panthers and held them scoreless, not only for the 3rd Quarter, but until 1:58 left in the game.

Down 41-20 in the 4th Quarter, LHS scored on another short Davis TD run to put the Lions behind 41-26 with 10:04 left in the 4th Quarter.

But Johnson’s second touchdown helped put the game away for the Panthers. The Lions finished off the scoring with an Archie Ducote short touchdown pass and a converted 2-point conversion.
